Sebelum mengirim manusia untuk menjejakkan kakinya di asteroid di luar angkasa, sekelompok ilmuwan dan astronot NASA akan melakukan uji coba konsep dan teknik yang dibutuhkan untuk ekspedisi masa depan.Uji coba itu dilakukan pada tiruan batu ruang angkasa yang ditanamkan di dasar samudera.
Saat ini para insinyur telah meletakkan pondasi untuk ekspedisi NASA ke-15 bertajuk “NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations” atau disingkat NEEMO 15. Misi uji coba ini dijadwalkan akan digelar pada 17 Oktober mendatang.
Untuk mempersiapkan misi di bawah laut itu, kru penyelam telah memasang perangkat dan menyiapkan suasana berbatu yang dibutuhkan untuk mensimulasikan permukaan asteroid.
Ekspedisi NEEMO sendiri digelar di Aquarius Underwater Laboratory
Milik National Oceanic and Atmosfpheric Administration yang berada di kedalaman 19 meter di bawah permukaan laut, lepas pantai Florida.
“Ekspedisi akan mensimulasi perjalanan ke asteroid, dan para ‘aquanauts’ akan menginvestigasi bagaimana cara terbaik untuk menuju ke permukaan batu ruang angkasa dan berjalan di sekelilingnya,” kata Brandi Dean, juru bicara NASA seperti dikutip dari Foxnews, 12 Mei 2011.
Tidak seperti mendarat di bulan atau Mars, pendaratan di asteroid akan lebih sulit karena kalaupun ada, gravitasi akan sangat sedikit. Untuk itu, NEEMO 15 akan mengevaluasi berbagai metode pendaratan dan melakukan uji coba di bawah laut merupakan salah satu cara terbaik untuk mensimulasikan kondisi gravitasi rendah.
“Para pakar sekalipun tidak tahu seperti apa permukaan asteroid,” kata Bill Todd, Project Manager NEEMO. “Di luar sana ada asteroid yang kita belum ketahui dan sedang menuju ke sini. Untuk itu kami mencari cara terbaik untuk melakukan pendaratan di sana,” ucapnya.
