Baru-baru ini, fosil spesies dinosaurus jenis baru ditemukan di area provinsi Shandong, China. Spesies baru yang digambarkan keluarga dekat dari Tyrannosaurus rex tersebut kemudian dinamai Zhuchengtyrannus magnus.

"Kami namai genus baru ini Zhuchengtyrannus magnus atau 'Raksasa dari Zhucheng' karena tulang belulang ditemukan di Zhucheng," ujar Xu Xing, peneliti dari Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology di Chinese Academy of Science, seperti dilansir Xinhua pekan lalu.

Para pakar paleontologi China memastikan penemuan baru mereka tersebut setelah mendapati rahang atas yang unik menyusul pemeriksaan tengkorak dan tulang rahang yang ditemukan di kota Zhucheng. Tulang belulang ini, jika disusun, diperkirakan membentuk sosok makhluk dengan panjang 11 meter, tinggi 4 meter, dan beratnya mendekati 7 ton.

Tulang purbakala itu cuma beberapa sentimeter lebih pendek daripada tulang belulang serupa pada spesies T-rex. "Sehingga, tak ada keraguan lagi bahwa Zhuchengtyrannus adalah Tyrannosaurus besar," kata Xu kepada kantor berita Xinhua.

Menurut Xu pula, Zhuchengtyrannus magnus adalah anggota dari kelompok theropod spesial yang disebut Tyrannosaurines, yang ada di Amerika Utara dan Asia sebelah timur selama era Cretaceous Akhir yang berumur antara 65 sampai 99 juta tahun lalu.

Zhucheng merupakan salah satu tempat di dunia dengan penemuan terbanyak tulang-tulang dinosaurus. Sedikitnya 10 spesies dinosaurus ditemukan di tiga tempat penggalian sejak 1960, termasuk spesies Tyrannosaurus dan Hadrosaurs. Keseluruhan Tyrannosaurus adalah karnivora, berkaki dua, serta umumnya juga memiliki tangan kecil dan tengkorak besar.

"We named the new genus is Zhuchengtyrannus magnus or the 'Giant of Zhucheng'because the bones were found in Zhucheng," said Xu Xing, a researcher from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy ofScience, as reported by Xinhua last week.

The Chinese paleontologists ensure their new discovery after discover unique maxillafollowing the examination of the skull and jaw bones found in the city of Zhucheng. Thesebones, if developed, is expected to form the figure of a creature with a length of 11meters, 4 meters tall, and weighs nearly 7 tons.

Ancient bones was just a few inches shorter than similar bones on T-rex species. "So, there's no doubt that Tyrannosaurus Zhuchengtyrannus is huge," said Xu told Xinhuanews agency.

According to Xu also, Zhuchengtyrannus magnus is a member of the theropod group ofspecial-called Tyrannosaurines, which exist in North America and east Asia during the Late Cretaceous era, between the ages of 65 to 99 million years ago.

Zhucheng is one place in the world with the largest discovery of dinosaur bones. At least10 species of dinosaur found in three places excavation since 1960, including species of Tyrannosaurus and Hadrosaurs. Overall Tyrannosaurus are carnivorous, bipedal, andgenerally also have small hands and a large skull.
